How we compared

Pencil wrote this comparison. Pencil is part of The Brandtech Group.

We compared public documentation from Writer and from Pencil, checked on 30 September 2026.

Please note: “Not found” means we searched Writer's public product pages, documentation, press releases and legal pages and found no description of that feature. It does not mean the feature does not exist.

Products change often, so check with each vendor before you buy. If you think we have something wrong, tell us through trypencil.com/contact and we will review it.

Pencil makes the whole campaign

Writer's agents research across sources, plan, draft and check their own work. Admins can now enable specialised models for image generation. We did not find video, voiceover, ad formats or media activation in Writer's public documentation.

Pencil covers those steps. Its agents make copy, images, video and voiceover. Feed variations and AI Auto Resize adapt the work across formats, and finished work exports to your ad accounts. Pencil's creative team delivered more than 1,600 creatives for Salomon's XT-6 launch across six markets in eight weeks, with no physical shoot.

Both let you choose models

Palmyra X6 is Writer's default agent model. Admins can enable models from providers such as Anthropic and OpenAI, or bring their own. Writer publishes evaluation results for Palmyra X6 against five other frontier models.

Pencil runs third-party models from OpenAI, Google, Anthropic, Adobe, Runway, Bria and others. AdEvals publishes worked tests by use case across those models and Pencil's own agents. Failures are included.

Brand governance beyond text

Since May 2026, Writer's brand governance enforces voice, terminology and style across marketing workflows. For work that lives in words, that covers a great deal.

Campaigns also live in pictures, motion and sound. In Pencil, Workflows carry brand references into image and video generation, and Approval nodes hold work for review. The platform adds guardrails, approval workflows and audit trails. On Pro plans, the terms include an output indemnity and a no-train commitment.

Choose Writer if

  • Your work ends in documents, copy and internal content.
  • You want a model family built by the same company that builds the agents.
  • You want strict voice and terminology rules across text.
  • You want to build custom agents with low-code tools or with Writer's solutions team.

Choose Pencil if

  • Your brief ends in a campaign in market.
  • You want copy, images, video and voiceover in one platform, adapted across formats.
  • You want brand references and approvals across every format.
  • You want published tests across models from several vendors.
